ABILITY/SKILL TITLE› undead physiology: death knights are an advanced, high-functioning form of undead and in his case, he has many of the benefits of a living person without the associated weaknesses. For example, he can survive injuries that would kill a living person (with their need for things like organs and such). He requires very little sleep and tires more slowly. Holy magic burns as much as it heals, so it is not a recommended form of healing but more natural magics are more effective and gentle. The best method of healing is with more necromancy.
› enhanced resistances: he does not suffer from exposure to extremely low temperatures and has a much higher tolerance to warm temperatures (but not fire!). He is immune to most, if not all diseases (found on Azeroth). The exception is the Blight developed by the Forsaken.
› advanced combat skills: highly trained and experienced in hand-to-hand / unarmed combat, one-handed weapons (swords, daggers, maces), and two-handed weapons (swords, maces, axes).
› unholy specialisation: Unholy death knights are masters of necromancy and pestilence. In addition to his existing combat abilities, he is able to manipulate several forms of magic-based pathogens as well as specialised undead constructs of his own making.
› rune weapons: death knights derive much of their power from their unique rune weapons. A weapon must be taken to a special "runeforge" for the process to actually work, but once a weapon has been given runes it becomes something of a living weapon. The weapon is bound to the Knight who forged it, influencing the death knight by way of the Endless Hunger — a compulsion and desire to cause suffering, pain, and death. Those who try to deny the Endless Hunger have been known to go mad from it or lose control until they are able to satisfy the weapon's need.
› other runic power: he utilises the runic bond in other ways. Traejan has runes all over his body that appear like the result of ritual scarification. These glow with the same light as his eyes and the runes on his weapons, suggesting their magical significance. When the appropriate runes are applied to the bodies of his undead constructs in the same places, he becomes linked to them. Their senses become an extension of his senses and it becomes disorienting when he is cut off from that.
› insect swarm: related to his Unholy specialisation, he maintains a mutually beneficial arrangement with a swarm of plague insects. They form a defence as well as an offensive tactic that he doesn't need to actively control and in exchange, he provides them with plenty of sustenance, necromantic energy, and a place to live. They're the main reason why he wasn't able to replace his left arm with a closely matching organic arm...
› engineering skills: Azerothian technology is primarily composed of large machinery and vehicles rather than the sort of thing we associate with consumer electronics, so he knows his way around hardware and tools and he's got a very good mind for figuring things out, especially if he can take them apart and put them back together. There is also a definite magical aspect to a lot of technology so he is familiar with blending the two together.
› arcane knowledge: While undeath cut off his abilities to manipulate arcane magic as he used to, he still retains all of his experience and years of careful study. As a Spellbreaker he was particularly specialised in dealing with complex spell weaves and unravelling them.
› polyglot: he has always had a particular knack for picking up different languages (and having many years to study them has helped). He speaks his native language of Thalassian fluently, of course. After that, he knows Common and Orcish although his accent would be quite pronounced in both. It is generally accepted that there was a language among the Scourge. He can also read Gnomish and Goblin and can understand quite a bit of the Nerubian language even if he can't physically speak it (for lack of clicky spider mouthparts and all).
› medical / anatomical knowledge: while definitely not a trained medic, he does know his way around the body quite well. He would be quite capable of things like suturing wounds or setting broken bones, but as he's only ever put undead bodies back together one can assume it wouldn't be as soothing a process as being cared for by a proper medic.
› survival skills: he was trained as a soldier and has plenty of experience in the wilderness. He is capable of hunting, tracking, and building fires among other useful skills. He would be able to identify edible plant life and such, assuming he is in his own world.
› musical skills: he can read music and play several instruments (violin, piano, harpsichord).
into the past
BIRTHBorn the eldest child of Lord Eridanus Lightrend and Lady Imrinde Redmorn. Much is expected of him as the product of the union of two powerful noble houses.
NEAR-DROWNING INCIDENT
At age nine, Traejan falls through the ice into a frozen pond while traveling with his mother in Lordaeron. He recovers but is left with lasting damage to his lungs from the complications.
SPELLBREAKER TRAINING
Vittani agrees to train Traejan in the hope that he would be able to find his own path as well as strengthen him to help overcome his condition.
His brother Telarion is born this same year.
FIFTIETH YEAR
Tarin is born. He remains very close to his siblings and his mother despite ongoing problems with his father.
FIRST NOVEL PUBLISHED
Although he hired someone to do the actual writing, Traejan's own experiences directly provide the plot for the Spellbreaker series of romance novels. He's very proud of them.
THE FALL OF QUEL'THALAS
The now corrupt Prince Arthas Menethil invades Quel'Thalas with the Scourge army. Traejan is killed during the assault on Silvermoon City by a nerubian.
AWAKENING IN ICECROWN
Traejan finally regains full awareness in Icecrown, raised as a Death Knight. Feeling a sense of incredible gratitude to the Lich King for saving him from death, he serves willingly.
He hones his skills working within the Unholy discipline in the Fleshwerks, crafting new horrors. He truly loves his work.
THE FALL OF THE LICH KING
Traejan does not take this well. He retreats into seclusion while he tries to find a way to cope with the loss.
RETURN TO QUEL'THALAS
Eventually, he returns to his family home. His parents are still considered missing (and presumed dead) but his siblings are both still alive. Telarion had joined the Blood Knights and Tarin had become a warlock, which does not sit well with either of her brothers.
Telarion's belief in the Light creates a rift between them.
ALLEGIANCE TO THE BANSHEE QUEEN
Seeking familiarity, he begins working for the Forsaken and devotes himself to Sylvanas despite her having been a significant enemy of the Scourge.
THE OTHER LOYALISTS
After discovering a small group of other Scourge loyalists he joins them but soon realises the group is led by a charismatic but ineffective individual whose methods do not sit well with him. He eventually tires of trying to bow and scrape for approval from someone who he feels is beneath him and disposes of the Highlord and his followers.
He also meets Rosefica for the first time around this time.
REBUILDING WHAT WAS LOST
His family and his house having lost considerable resources and prestige with everything that happened, something major would need to be done. Traejan concentrates his energy on working with the Horde instead of trying to gain traction within Quel'Thalas.
DREAD COMMANDER
He negotiates a special contract for himself, seeing his own value as above and beyond that of the common Horde soldier. He takes command of a small, dedicated squad and carries out missions that call for their unique skill set.
He throws his full support behind the current Warchief, Garrosh Hellscream.
THE FORMER LORD RETURNS
Eridanus resurfaces unexpectedly. He is a shadow of the great man he used to be — at least by reputation; Traejan would argue that he was never great. Managing to lure Traejan into a trap, it is thanks to the intervention of Rosefica and Telarion that he only loses his left arm in the ordeal.
Unable to replace his arm with an organic one due to the rejection of his resident insect swarm, he finds a mechanised option instead.
THE LEGION
The Burning Legion returns for a major assault on Azeroth.
Telarion had taken advantage of a friend of the family who was a bronze dragonsworn and gone back on his own timeline, emerging in the present with the other Illidari.
Now that his brother is a demon, this reopens some old wounds between them.
THE LICH KING SPEAKS
Though Bolvar Fordragon took over the burden of being the Lich King after Arthas' death, he was silent for years. Now with the new threat of the Legion, the new Lich King finally made His presence known.
As he was always loyal to the Scourge, having the Ebon Blade arrange an agreement and serve once more under the Lich King allows all the pieces to fall into place for him.
Somehow he's managing to have it all.
THE FOURTH WAR
Traejan does extremely well for himself with the renewed conflict between the Horde and Alliance.
He is in full support of Warchief Sylvanas Windrunner, especially after the War of the Thorns and her decision to burn Teldrassil, because getting into politics has never gone badly for him previously..
SHADOWLANDS?
Sylvanas goes to Icecrown Citadel and confronts the Lich King, ultimately defeating him in her quest for... whatever her goals ultimately are. She seizes the Helm of Domination and destroys it, creating a rift between the physical world and the Shadowlands.
This is a very bad feeling.
